Lindisfarne and the Farne Islands

Sunday morning was an early start as we left the college at 7:45am to travel to Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island. The journey took approx 2 hours.

When we arrived at Lindisfarne there were two choices, either travel by road the last eight miles in the coach or, to walk the three and a half miles across the Causeway.

Approximately 40 of us chose the second option. Many folk walked bare foot but I chose to wear my wet shoes, I am glad I did, because as we slid down the wall to commence our walk it was extremely muddy and slippery.

The walk took us through water, mud, bog and sand. There was certainly plenty of variety in the walking conditions. It took us about one and a quarter hours to complete the walk.

As we walked across the Causeway we participated in a Pilgrimage meditation, there were times when we stopped and prayed together.

As we were walking across we could hear the sound of the seals, but we only could see them at a distance.

When we arrived on the island, we had a packed lunch before we had time to explore the island.

We made our way to the church at 2pm and shared in a Eucharist Service for Lindisfarne Pilgrims.

After the service we returned to the coach to travel to Seahouses and the opportunity to take a boat ride to the Farne Islands, more of this in my next blog.
